Interview: Malcolm, son of Gwen, Nightingale Hammerson

We met with Malcolm, whose mother lives at Nightingale Hammerson and is supported by the Teton system in her apartment. As a family member closely involved in her care, Malcolm has experienced firsthand how Teton and dedicated care teams can work together to support his mom.

“What matters most to me is that Teton doesn't replace human care, it enhances it.”

When you look for a care home for someone you love, the most important thing is that they're safe and properly cared for. For me, that's always been the starting point. At Nightingale Hammerson, I already felt that the quality of the staff and the management was very good. They're caring, professional, and genuinely engaged with the residents.

What Teton adds to that is another layer of reassurance. My mother is not in perfect health. She's had a stroke, her mobility is limited, and like many older people, she can be a bit stubborn. She wouldn't wear a physical alarm at home. So knowing there is a system in place that can monitor changes in her movement, respiration, sleep patterns, or unusual behaviour gives me peace of mind.

At first, I had a few questions about privacy, mainly because I didn't fully understand how it worked. But once it was explained that it doesn't physically see her, those concerns went away. There's always a balance, but her safety is of the greatest importance to me and my brothers.

The staff can't be in every room all the time. If the system helps them focus their attention where it's really needed and intervene quickly if something changes, then that's a positive thing. From what I've seen, it seems to be doing exactly what it's intended to do.

I have no concerns or criticisms. On the contrary, I think it's a great innovation. If anything makes my mother safer and supports the team at Nightingale Hammerson to do their job even better, then I would view that as a very good thing.

I don't mind paying what we pay if we get the value for it. I probably do mind paying if you don't. I've had relatives in other homes where I can't say that. I hope that Teton is able to be rolled out more widely across the care sector. As with most things, though, some care homes are more willing to invest than others. This one does.
